Salahis Appear Before House Committee, Forced to Plead 5th on All Questions
<p>Michaele and Tareq Salahi, known as the White House party crashers, appeared before the House Homeland Security Committee today and pleaded the fifth for all questions on advice of counsel. Good for them.</p> <p>As explained in my commentary on the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://eventplanning.about.com/od/eventplanningbasics/a/white-house-party-crashers-social-secretary-inquiry-crashergate-should-end.htm">White House party crashers</a>, the committee risked embarrassing itself by further pursuing its investigation by choosing to not subpoena White House social secretary Desiree Rogers who was responsible for the event guest list and all logistics. Rogers chose to attend the event and host a table rather than serve in her capacity as event manager. </p> <p>So today, committee members forced the Salahis to appear at a hearing on the incident and asked any question they wished. The committee knew in advance that the Salahis would exercise their legal right to the fifth amendment. Should they have answered any question, the Salahis would have been required to answer every question and without legal protection. This, according to media legal explanations. </p> <p>Unless the committee holds a fair hearing, it seems they should have bigger priorities for their limited time. Of course, congressional panel members used this as a political opportunity. In fact, Representative Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) raised unrelated social issues. Rep. Two New Floor Plan Options Presented at PCMA 2010 Annual Conference
<p>Two innovative room setup designs for meetings and events were featured at the 2010 <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.pcma.org/x9.xml">PCMA</a> Annual Meeting recently in Dallas, TX. The intent of both room setups is to give an alternative to <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://eventplanning.about.com/od/conferenceservices/tp/meeting_floor_plans.htm">traditional event setup floor plans</a>. These setups are intended increase attendee participation and allow a greater sense of one-on-one interaction between the speakers and attendees.</p> <p>One setup features a circular stage and a combination of mixed seating types, creating varied concentric circles surrounding the stage. Each circle increased in seating height to provide a stadium seating feel. The seating arrangement creates a more inviting and engaging feel, increasing networking and small group discussion.</p> <p>The second setup features a round stage with four smaller satellite stages. Tavern on the Green Closing Reminds Importance of Investigating Restaurants Before Signing Event Agreements
<p><img src="http://z.about.com/d/eventplanning/1/G/0/4/-/-/tavern-on-the-green.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" align="right" /></p> <p>This past New Year's Eve ended an era that spanned more than three decades under the same family ownership for Tavern on the Green in New York City (first meal served there was 1936). High end banquets and corporate events accounted for about 60 percent of the restaurant's annual revenues, according to a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/16/dining/16tavern.html"><i>New York Times</i></a> article (September 16, 2009).</p> <p>While the closing of its doors is certainly a disappointment from a nostalgic perspective, it should also serve as a critical reminder to event planners about the importance of taking steps to research the viability of the venues chosen for events.</p> <p>Unfortunately, in addition to losing its bid to extend its operating license, Tavern on the Green owners filed bankruptcy to avoid delivering on required union obligations and at least US$8 million in debts to various creditors.</p> <p>The closing of New York's Tavern on the Green reminds us of the importance of investigating venues in depth - especially restaurants - where the vast majority of events are held each year.</p> <p>Learn more about what<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://eventplanning.about.com/od/venueselection/tp/evaluating_restaurants.htm"> seven steps event planners should consider before contracting events at restaurants</a>.</p> <p>Photo: Diners eat lunch in the Crystal Room of Tavern on the Green December 30, 2009 in New York City.
